So, when they met in February 1964, just after Ginsberg had returned from a long sojourn on the West Coast, they quickly became friends. “Garrulous and inquisitive, Allen could have been the flip side to Dylan’s personality,” Barry Miles wrote. But opposites can polarize as well as unite. What cemented Dylan and Ginsberg’s friendship was their complementary ambitions. Bob wanted to write more like a poet. Ginsberg wanted to use his poetry to make music.

During the Rolling Thunder Revue tour eleven years later, Dylan dragged Ginsberg on the road and dubbed him King of the whole proceedings. “You’ve never found your kingdom, but you’ve always been the king,” Bob told him. Dylan also understood that for his hairy, ecstasy-seeking (and finding) friend searching for that kingdom—the kingdom of love in all its aspects, carnal and spiritual—was more to the point than finding it.

Over the years, Dylan and Ginsberg planned all sorts of projects. Many were films: A movie based on Kaddish, Ginsberg’s moving elegy to his late mentally ill mother, Naomi (which was to have been directed by photographer Robert Frank), for instance. They also made demo recordings together in the 1970s. Whatever Ginsberg taught Dylan began long before they met, while Dylan more tangibly taught Ginsberg about music.
